Mindfulness Relaxation Strategies for Children & Youth Ages 5 to 17

Helps with Attention, Self-Regulation, Engagement, Compassion, and Cultivates feelings of Calmness, Peacefulness, and Reduces Stress. Especially beneficial for Children and Youth experiencing Anxiety, Depression, and or Chronic Pain Conditions.

What is Mindfulness ?
Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to our experience(s) in the moment. By paying attention to our senses, body, thoughts, sights, and sounds, we can begin to teach ourselves acceptance, kindness, and allow ourselves to be non judgemental of thoughts that tend to focus on the past and future that may cause feelings of stress, depression, anxiety, low-self esteem, etc. Mindfulness teaches you how to observe these thoughts and feelings with a level of acceptance rather than allowing them to take control. By being mindful it teaches you how to be open and honest with yourself with whatever is happening in the moment, and by doing so helps to support and increase happiness and well being not only of yourself but others as well.
What Can I Expect?
When working with Children and Adolescents Parental Consent & Attendance is Required and Occurs in the Comfort of the Clients' Home. The Goal of therapy is to not only engage the child/youth but to work with families and provide educational efforts so that parents can also support & assist in the treatment process. This is done by way of assigning creative therapeutic, fun, and engaging activities, that foster healthy emotional, physical, and psychological development. I use both psychotherapy techniques as well as educational methods that follow a weekly curriculum and focus on all aspects of the self such as emotion/mood, physical symptoms, and psychological distress. Examples are provided below. Each Child & Adolescent has their own unique qualities and sessions are tailored on an individual basis.

About Me

As a psychotherapist I am dedicated to improving the health and well being of my clients and it is my goal to make the therapeutic process as comfortable as possible. I work from a positive psychology perspective geared towards increasing confidence, self-esteem and helping you recognize your own individual strengths. Often times when a person experiences a traumatic or stressful event they report feeling as if their life or 'being' is unbalanced.  You may feel shaken by the incident and have difficulty coping with day to day tasks experiencing bouts of depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, hypervigilence, chronic pain, social isolation, addictions, etc. The stressful event can also effect loved ones and the people around you. By increasing your self awareness we can address the way you view your self and the experiences around you. Everybody has a story and sometimes we need a little help to get over the hurdles in life from time to time.

My work history entails 15 + years experience within the mental health field stemming from Crisis Worker in the emergency dept. at Southlake Regional Health Centre (2009 to 2017), On scene response with victim services york region (vol.) and lastly extensive counselling/case management experience with Dual diagnosis clients, Acquired/Traumatic Brain Injury clients & At Risk Children/Youth.
